We are used to thinking that freedom fosters creativity. But is that really true? Or, at least, is it true for everyone?
Many stories are born from rules, constraints, or limitations. Just think of Georges Perec and his experiments with the Oulipo movement. Staying within the world of picture books, did you know that Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham after betting his publisher that he could use only fifty different words? He succeeded, turning a constraint into the driving force of the story.
In this two-day workshop dedicated to picture-book making, Marianna Coppo will guide participants in exploring how constraints can become liberating tools for narrative and visual invention.
Through a combination of practical and theoretical exercises, we will play, experiment, and challenge ourselves with a series of creative prompts, discovering how limitations can open up new possibilities and how an oblique perspective can help us question conventions, generate unexpected ideas, and bring to life stories we might never have imagined otherwise.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in exploring the narrative possibilities of the picture book, regardless of their drawing skills or technical experience. An email with information about the materials will be sent to you.
Marianna Coppo Marianna Coppo was born and lives in Rome, where she writes and illustrates picture books with the help of her cats. She is the creator of over a dozen books including Petra, translated into 14 languages and a Kirkus Best Picture Book of 2018 and nominee for the Kate Greenaway Medal; Thingamabob, winner of the 34th Chen Bochui International Children's Literature Award; and The Book That Can Read Your Mind, an Amazon, Indigo, and Barnes & Noble Best Book of 2024 and finalist for the Andersen Award for Best Book for ages 6–9 in 2025. Her latest picture book, already translated into fourteen languages, is I Will Eat You in the End, written by David Duff. In 2025, she took part in the Maurice Sendak Fellowship in Connecticut.
